A classic refreshment

A timeless cocktail that perfectly balances the tartness of lime with the smoothness of tequila and the sweetness of orange liqueur. This refreshing drink is perfect for any occasion.

1 cocktail
5 minutes

Ingredients

Weight Ingredient
2 oz (60ml) silver/blanco tequila
1 oz (30ml) fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
¾ oz (22ml) orange liqueur (Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier)
½ oz (15ml) simple syrup (optional, for sweeter taste)
1 teaspoon Coarse salt
1 Lime

Prepare the Glass (1 minute)

1

Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass to moisten it. Pour coarse salt onto a small plate and gently dip the moistened rim into the salt, rotating to coat evenly. Set the glass aside. If you prefer your margarita without salt, simply skip this step.

Prepare Fresh Lime Juice (2 minutes)

2

Roll the lime on a hard surface while pressing down to break the internal membranes, making juicing easier. Cut the lime in half and juice it, straining out any seeds. Fresh lime juice is crucial for the best flavor – avoid bottled lime juice if possible.

Shake the Cocktail (1 minute)

3

Add tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur to your cocktail shaker. If you prefer a sweeter margarita, add the simple syrup. Fill the shaker with ice cubes, ensuring there’s enough ice to properly chill the drink.

Shake and Strain (30 seconds)

4

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds. The shaker should feel very cold to the touch. Strain the mixture into your prepared glass over fresh ice (for on the rocks) or strain into a chilled glass without ice (for straight up).

Garnish and Serve (30 seconds)

5

Cut a wheel from the remaining lime and make a small slit to perch it on the rim of the glass. Serve immediately while cold.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

Margaritas are best served fresh, but you can prepare a larger batch for parties. Mix all liquid ingredients (excluding ice) and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add ice and shake individual servings as needed.

Simple syrup stays fresh in the refrigerator for up to one month. To make simple syrup, combine equal parts water and sugar, heat until sugar dissolves, then cool completely.
